Syllabus › Module 04, Marketing, kept simple
Instagram, simply: bringing traffic without losing the account
In brief
On Instagram, the bio is the sensitive spot: Meta publishes that content offering contact methods to obtain pornographic material, or containing links to pornographic sites, is not allowed. The link therefore leads to Telegram or to a link page, never to an adult content platform. Three figures a week are enough: views, followers gained, clicks.
What you will be able to do
- Set up an Instagram account consistent with the persona, with a bio that sends people to the right destination.
- Describe the rules published by Meta that matter for this business, and what they forbid in a bio.
- Measure an account with three numbers and nothing else.
Instagram is the network where a creator’s persona is the most visible, and the one where the bio is read the most. This lesson stays simple: one account, three formats, one rhythm, the rules that matter, and three numbers.
The account
An Instagram acquisition account is judged on four elements, and they must tell the same story as the persona sheet from the start of this module.
The profile photo. A face, sharp, recognizable at small size. It is the only image seen by someone hesitating to follow.
The name and the handle. The persona’s first name, the same on every network. A different handle per platform loses people at every hop.
The bio. Three lines at most: who she is, one open topic of the persona, and a neutral invitation to click. What you leave out matters more than what you put in, and the next section details it.
The link. One only, to the destination chosen in the funnel lesson: Telegram, or a link page that leads to Telegram. Never to an adult content platform, for the reason published below.
The formats
Three formats, each with a function.
Short reels do the “seen” step. They are shown to people who do not follow the account, so they carry acquisition. A successful reel rests on an open topic of the persona, not on a suggestive hook: that kind of hook does not travel and exposes you to the rules below.
Stories do the “followed” to “clicked” step. They are only seen by followers, they disappear, and they accept a link. That is where the invitation to join Telegram gets repeated without cluttering the profile.
Carousels establish the persona over time. They stay on the profile and give a new visitor something to browse before deciding to follow.
The rhythm
Regularity beats intensity, and it is even more true here because a silent account loses its stories, and therefore its link. A sustainable rhythm looks like this: reels several times a week, stories every day, a carousel from time to time. The right number is the one you will hold for three months, not the one that impresses in the first week. The schedulers presented in module 8 exist precisely to hold that rhythm.
The rules published by Meta that matter
Instagram applies Meta’s Community Standards, the same as Threads. Two texts concern this business, and they must be read as written.
The policy on sexual solicitation forbids content that “asks for, offers or provides methods of contact to acquire pornographic material, or contains usernames or links to pornographic websites”. That is the sentence that governs the bio.
The policy on adult nudity forbids in particular photorealistic imagery showing visible genitalia, “Visible anuses and/or close-ups of visible buttocks” and “Visible female nipples”, outside of a breastfeeding or protest context. That is the sentence that governs reels and carousels.
A third text is less known and just as useful. Instagram’s Help Center publishes a page on recommendations, which lists content that is allowed on the platform but not eligible for recommendations, meaning not shown to people who do not follow the account. It cites in particular “pictures of people in see-through clothing”, “near nudity such as nudity covered by digital overlay”, “A photo zoomed in on someone’s buttocks”, and content linked to “adult products and services”. The same page states that Instagram avoids recommending accounts that “Recently violated Instagram’s Community Guidelines” or that “Repeatedly and/or recently shared content we try not to recommend in the account name, username, profile photo, bio or profile”.
Instagram also publishes, on its official blog, a tool called Account Status, which lets you “See if your content may be eligible to be recommended to non-followers in places like Explore, Reels and Feed Recommendations”, and request a second look through the “Request a Review” button. The Help Center specifies that “your eligibility for recommendations doesn’t guarantee that your content will be recommended”. This is the only official information on what the industry calls a “shadowban”, and it can be checked in the account settings.
What never goes in a bio
Based on the texts above, the list is short and has no exceptions.
- The name of an adult content platform, written out, abbreviated, disguised with symbols or suggested by an emoji.
- A direct link to that platform, even through a URL shortener.
- A username on that platform.
- An explicit invitation to buy sexual content.
What remains possible: a first name, a topic, a tone, a neutral invitation to talk elsewhere, and a link to a destination that is not an adult content site.
The link destination
Two choices, already compared in the funnel lesson. Telegram gives you a list you control and a messaging channel where you can sell. A link page adds a step, but lets you offer several destinations and measure clicks. In both cases, the destination is not the content platform, because Meta’s sentence on links applies to the displayed link, not only to the published content.
Simple measurement
Three numbers per account per week, in the table described in the account hygiene lesson.
| Number | Where to read it | What it diagnoses |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Reels and stories insights | Is the content being shown |
| Followers gained | Account insights, per week | Does the content make people want to follow |
| Link clicks | Bio link or link page statistics | Does the bio convert |
Only one step leaks at a time. Views without followers is the content. Followers without clicks is the bio. Clicks without conversations is the destination, and that is no longer an Instagram matter.
Key takeaways
- Meta publishes that content that "asks for, offers or provides methods of contact to acquire pornographic material, or contains usernames or links to pornographic websites" is not allowed. The bio is the first thing concerned.
- Instagram publishes a list of content that is allowed but not eligible for recommendations, including "pictures of people in see-through clothing" and "a photo zoomed in on someone's buttocks", and an account state you can check in "Account Status".
- The bio link leads to Telegram or to a link page, never to an adult content site.
- Three numbers are enough: views, followers gained, link clicks. Per week, per account.
Do this now
Set up or review your Instagram account with this lesson in front of you. Thirty minutes.
- Open the Meta page on sexual solicitation cited in the sources and reread your bio next to it. Remove anything that names or suggests an adult content site.
- Open "Account Status" in the account settings and write down what it shows today, with the date.
- Write a posting rhythm you can hold for a month: number of reels, stories and carousels per week. A number you will keep, not an ambitious one.
- Add a line for this account in the
acquisitiontab of the spreadsheet, with the three numbers for the week.
